Best of all, she’s a big yielder in the garden, so why not plant Skunk seeds of your own? Find out how to do exactly that below.

About Skunk #1 Seeds

Background

To understand the Skunk #1 phenomenon, you’ve got to go back — way back.

In the 1960s and 70s, California breeders were at work experimenting with early forms of hybrids. Rather than cross strains like Cherry Pie and OG Kush, they worked with pure landrace strains like Colombian Gold, Mexican sativas, and Afghan Kush.

A breeder going by the name Sam the Skunkman had the brilliant idea of crossing 25% Acapulco Gold, 25% Afghani, and 50% Colombian Gold to produce an amazingly well-rounded hybrid. That hybrid was, of course, the first iteration of Skunk #1.

What made Skunk #1 unlike anything before was its ability to transcend the divisions between sativas and indicas by harmoniously integrating both their qualities into one strain.

Sam the Skunkman is a mysterious character who appeared in Santa Cruz, California with the new strain, only to be jailed shortly after. Upon his release from jail, Skunkman abandoned the United States and made for the Netherlands, where the climate around marijuana was much better.

Once in Amsterdam, Skunkman’s Sacred Seeds outfit sold thousands of Skunk #1 seeds before being shut down. At this point, many disputes about the seed’s history flare up. Sacred Seeds, Sensi Seeds, and others all claim to have intervened somewhere in the 1980s after Skunkman’s second run-in with the law.

What is known is that much of the original Skunk #1 seed stock ended up in the hands of Sensi Seeds just after Sacred Seeds went under. Today, Sensi Seeds holds the trademarked version of Skunk #1, making it pretty clear who won control of the Skunk narrative.

The sheer number of famous descendants owing their lineage to Skunk No. 1 seeds is incredible. UK Cheese, Chemdawg 91, and Super Lemon Haze are just a few of the thousands of strains indebted to Skunkman’s creation.

Growing Skunk #1 Seeds

Strains that are difficult to work with don’t pick up such large followings. After all, the harder a plant makes it for you to grow them in various climates, mediums, and work them into crosses, the less you’ll be a repeat customer.

Skunk #1 is one of just a few strains that have managed to eliminate the barrier to entry for novice growers and breeders. Because of this, many top names in the cannabis industry owe their start to Skunk #1 seeds.

If you’re ready to make the leap and start growing this worthwhile hybrid, try beginning with feminized Skunk No. 1 seeds. Feminized seeds don’t require sexing during flowering, which means no need to understand the difference between male and female plants.

Ready to plant your Skunk No. 1 seeds in the soil? Let’s go.

Grow Difficulty:

Very easy for novices and experts alike.

Optimal Growing Conditions and Climate:

Skunk #1 seeds can be planted indoors, outdoors, and in greenhouses. Depending on your outdoor climate, a greenhouse might be the best route to avoid cold nighttime temperatures.

Because of Skunk’s mostly continental landrace lineage, warm temperatures are a must. Keep your environment between 68°F to 82°F, although Skunk #1 plants can tolerate slight shifts beyond that range in either direction.

Humidity should be kept below 65% RH during vegetation, but flowering will require that number to drop below 55%. Don’t forget to ensure plenty of air circulation to avoid bud rot, either.

Flowering Time:

Skunk #1 is a fast flowering variety capable of finishing up in 6 to 7 weeks.

Yield:

Expect a generous yield of up to 500 grams per square meter indoors, or 550-600 grams per plant outdoors.

Height:

Skunk #1 plants are about average in height, with most phenotypes remaining under 110cm.

Resistance to Pests and Mold:

Highly resistant to pests and mold.

Strain Description and Properties

The Appearance of Skunk #1 Weed:

Back in the day, any weed that looked good was called Skunk. The reason why is easy to see — Skunk #1 looks fantastic. If you put any other run of the mill bud next to a nug of Skunk, you’d call anything with top-shelf looks Skunk as well.

The star of the show when it comes to Skunk #1 is the calyx content. The calyxes on these buds are phenomenal. Foxtails that look like optical illusions create whirlpools of trichomes, delicious green leaves, and mandarin orange hairs.

While the buds aren’t dense, they are extremely spongey, spear-shaped, and massive. The airy build of a Skunk #1 means your colas just may end up being the size of, well, a can of Coca Cola.

Dominant Cannabinoids Found in Skunk #1 Seeds:

Skunk #1 is THC dominant. In lab tests, the average THC content is between 15%-20%.

Dominant Terpenes Found in Skunk #1 Seeds:

The skunky, earthy, and subtly sweet flavors and aromas of Skunk #1 are famous around the world.

  • Myrcene — This terpene packs herbal aromas and flavors while delivering feelings of relaxing sedation.
  • Pinene — Pinene is a well known mood-boosting terpene found in forests worldwide.
  • Limonene — Present in most citrus fruits, limonene reduces stress and makes you laugh.

Effects of Skunk #1 Weed:

Sometimes, when you smoke an indica it’s just too sleepy. But then, when you smoke a sativa, it’s not relaxing enough. Where’s the middle ground in all of this?

Skunk #1 is it — this is what hybrids are meant to be. On the mental side of things, your thoughts become calm, creative, fun, and positive. Talking with friends is a hilarious good time, but so is tackling a task, listening to music, or watching a flick.

The physical side is relaxing but not overwhelmingly so, giving you enough of a body stone while not making you pass out on contact with a chair. So, while some claim this strain is indica dominant or sativa dominant, it’s better to respect it as a solid 50/50 hybrid.
