The Complete Guide to Cannabis Tourism in Los Angeles

Here’s everything you need to know to plan a 420 vacation in L.A.!

The Complete Guide to Cannabis Tourism in Los AngelesLos Angeles (frequently known by its abbreviation, L.A.), is one of the biggest and most cosmopolitan cities in the U.S. and has been a beloved vacation spot pretty much forever. Los Angeles is even more fun now that recreational cannabis use is legal throughout California by anyone 21 or older.

Though you will frequently catch the scent of weed on the streets of L.A., legal marijuana use is restricted to private residences or enclosed public spaces that permit it. There is a $100 fine associated with using marijuana in public view. However, you are allowed to carry cannabis with you as long as the amount doesn’t exceed 1 ounce of flower or 8 ounces of concentrate, and it’s stored out of sight or in a sealed childproof container.

We encourage you to stay safe on your Los Angeles weed vacation by using taxis, ride-sharing services, or hopping on LA Metro (light rail service) for transportation. But if you do plan to drive, the rules for cannabis are similar to those regarding alcohol – no open containers in the vehicle, and no driving under the influence.

Get ready to explore the limitless options for 420 fun in L.A. Here’s our list of all the best things to do on a Los Angeles cannabis vacation!

Getting started: where to find the best weed in L.A.

Anyone age 21 and older, residents or visitors, can buy recreational cannabis in Los Angeles as long as they have a valid government ID. Any cannabis purchased in California must be consumed in California. Please note that marijuana possession is still illegal in Federal spaces (such as airports and state parks). There is a relatively high marijuana tax in California, so if you are vacationing on a budget, be sure to confirm with your budtender whether posted prices are pre-tax or out-the-door.

Places to explore when you’re stoned

From museums to theme parks to jaw-dropping views, here’s our list of Los Angeles places that are even more impressive under the influence.

#17 Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA)

LACMA is an amazing place to lose yourself for the afternoon. With an intriguing variety of indoor and outdoor exhibits (including the famed Urban Light, a small forest of old-fashioned street lamps that is kept lit 24 hours a day), LACMA is a favorite of locals and tourists alike. A number of guided tour options are available if you want to fully immerse yourself in a particular collection. LACMA also periodically hosts classes and live music events.

LACMA is located on Wilshire Boulevard, in Hancock Park, which is also full of unique and interesting sculptures. LACMA is open every day except for Wednesdays, Christmas, and Thanksgiving. If you get hungry while you’re walking around the museum, there is a coffee shop and multiple dining options on-site, ranging from gourmet farm-to-table fare to burgers and fries.

#18 Museum of Illusions

If you’d prefer an experience where you’re part of the (incredibly fun and trippy) exhibit, the Museum of Illusions is for you! Bring your camera and sense of adventure as you explore over 30 different 3D illusions. From walking along the edge of a skyscraper that looks like it’s straight out of a cartoon to coming face-to-face with a dinosaur skeleton come to life on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the photo ops are endless. The Museum even features a 7-room upside-down house. If you need to sit down and take a rest, you’re welcome to stretch out on the couch – on the ceiling!

If quality photography is not your strong suit, the Museum of Illusions offers a VIP package, where you’ll get your own personal photographer and all of the photos emailed to you shortly after your visit. Perusing the photos over a smoke session is bound to be a fun way to unwind at the end of the day! The Museum of Illusions is located in the heart of Hollywood (in “the Vard”), a very short walk from the Hollywood/Highland Metro station. They are open every day from 10 a.m. to midnight.

#19 Griffith Observatory

To take in views of the famed Hollywood Sign, and the impressive Los Angeles skyline – with or without a sky full of stars – Griffith Observatory, in Griffith Park is one of the best spots to do it. But this is more than just a scenic overlook. Griffith Observatory also contains a small museum, a planetarium, and free public access to telescopes for stargazing. There are walking trails through the park if you want to lose yourself in nature for a little while.

Griffith Park and the Observatory grounds are open every day from sunrise to 10 p.m. The Observatory building opens later in the morning and stays open until 10 p.m., except for Mondays and most holidays. Admission to Griffith Park and Observatory is free, though parking is not. However, there is an easy (and inexpensive) bus service to Griffith Observatory from the Vermont/Sunset Metro station. Planetarium shows are only $7, and there are 3 different shows that regularly run. Please note that this is a Los Angeles City Park, and marijuana use here is not legal. All forms of smoking and vaping are disallowed in the park, so you may want to light up before you head up to the Observatory.

#20 Disney and Universal (of course)

Los Angeles is home to two of the most beloved theme parks in the world, Disneyland and Universal Studios Hollywood. Neither park permits you to bring marijuana inside, so be sure to plan accordingly. The immersive Wizarding World of Harry Potter is a destination in its own right and a must-see for anyone who’s ever wanted to escape into Harry’s universe for the day.

Disneyland, located in Anaheim, about 30 minutes south of downtown Los Angeles (in light traffic), is the place to be if you want to meet your childhood favorite characters in the flesh and enjoy the whimsical fun of classic rides like “It’s a Small World” and “Peter Pan’s Flight.” Star Wars fans can spend the day exploring a galaxy far, far away in Disneyland’s immersive new Galaxy’s Edge attraction. Both parks also host visually stunning holiday events throughout the Halloween and Christmas seasons.
